Throughout history, people have grown gardens at home and at school to provide food. Students will look at historical images of gardening and decide what order they belong in, showing how a garden grows, and thinking about the kind of garden they would like to have.
We put together a selection of fun and educational activities to help children, young people and adults learn from home during the coronavirus outbreak. The resources for children and young people were hand-picked by our teaching and learning advisers from Early Years right through to Post-16, and by Virtual Schools teams from Norfolk County Council and across the Eastern Region. The activities can support the learning that schools or educational settings provide during any future requirement for home learning.
Sesame Street in Communities is a big, remarkable collection of tools to help parents enrich the lives of children during their first six years, a time of critical brain development. The resources deal with topics ranging from early math and literacy to fitness and nutrition to serious topics such as divorce and food insecurity. Particularly relevant now are the resources on health emergencies, health & hygiene, offering comfort, resilience, self-care, traumatic experiences and community violence. In English and Spanish.

Letter Writing Campaign A consistent theme here, is identifying a child’s passion for something that relates to the interconnected world that they live in. Once you know what this is (they will let you know), begin a letter writing campaign. It doesn’t need to be about one thing. The environment, public education, and poverty are all concepts that kids grasp. But it must come from them, so don’t let your own politics get involved. Teach your child how to craft a successful letter campaign, helping them with form and grammar, but maintaining their voice 100%. These letters can be about their concern over pollution, the destruction of a local playground for condominium developments or how there needs to be more programs to combat food insecurity. The letters can go out to the media, to local municipal, provincial, or federal leaders in addition to school boards and/or businesses that impact their world. Letters can go to other altruistic organizations and foundations that serve the same efforts that they hope to contribute to. Our Foundation would be very excited to receive a letter from your child, so feel free to start with us! Let them know that they must be patient. Not all correspondence will be reciprocated, but eventually a response will come. All that it takes is one reply and your child will see how one small voice can be heard by very big ears.
